Horncastle Town 4 Reserves 3
With no first team fixture United fielded a number of senior players but crashed to their first defeat of the season at The Wong. Against the run of play, United found themselves two goals down inside ten minutes and the home side continued to look threatening on the break. But the Whites began to find some momentum lead by winger Gary Walters whose cross was turned home from short range by Scott Lowman. Then from a Horncastle corner, Phil McGann quickly found Rob Norris who drove almost the length of the pitch before a last gasp tackle diverted the ball past Maddison. United were now on top, skipper Ryan Creane almost converted a Norris corner and Gio Carchedi forced a good save from Maddison. United took the lead as once again Lowman was first to react to a loose ball from Danny Brooks corner, smashing home his eighth league goal of the season. But Horncastle bounced back and grabbed an equalizer just before the break.
A scrappy second period saw neither team find any rhythm until a fine save from McGann, racing quickly off his line, brought the game to life. Chasing three points, the Whites now switched Ben Good into attack. Gary Walters continued to probe forward and his cross was almost turned home by Good, who then headed Brooks’ corner over the bar. Walters’ long range effort was held by Maddison and Good was inches away from converting another Walters cross. But Horncastle, always dangerous on the break, snatched the points with a hotly contested goal in the closing minutes to bring United’s unbeaten run to an end. |
