Reserves 4 Caistor Rovers 1
A scrappy opening period to this evening fixture saw Caistor create the better openings early on, with both Nimmo and Snell forcing saves from Phil McGann. Caistor also looked dangerous from set pieces as United failed to settle, but the Whites did look lively on the counter attack – Chris Thompson fired a couple of long range efforts over the bar and Gavin Knight’s effort flashed wide. It was another United break which forced the opener, as Liburd crossed from the right Lowman’s shot was deflected and Walters smashed home the rebound.
The scoreline flattered United but they looked much sharper after the break. Top scorer Lowman broke free but shot straight at the in-form Vincent, then clever work from Knight in midfield released Thompson who volleyed home United’s second. Ryan Creane and Josh Giles now looked more resilient in defence, and substitutes Ben Good and Kallum Smith were introduced in attack. Then a moment of brilliance as Walters picked up a loose ball just inside Caistor’s half, spotted Vincent off his line and sent a looping shot which dropped perfectly under the bar. Knight added a fourth with a fine strike from a quickly taken corner, but Caistor responded in the final minutes when the dangerous Nimmo broke clear. McGann almost capped a brilliant display with a trademark point-blank save, but Nimmo reacted first to slot home the rebound. |
