United Reserves 3 v 0 Ruston Sports
By Damian Froggatt
United's Reserves extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a fine display in this Supplementary Cup quarter final agaiinst local rivals Ruston Sports. A brilliant hat trick in just eight minutes before half time from Scott Lowman was enough to seal the tie and send United into their second semi-final of the season.
Rustons started the game strongly and forced a number of set pieces, and Phil McGann had to be alert to make a brilliant point blank save to keep the scores level. United gradually played their way into the game through
Atkinson and Symmonds in midfield, and created a couple of half chances midway through the half.
The game sparked to life when Alex Knibbs forced a corner and from Danny Brooks' delivery Lowman was on hand with a sharp close range finish to open the scoring. Minutes later, Symmonds robbed Griffiths in midfield and his
pass released Lowman who raced clear and his cool finish extended United's lead. But the pick of the goals came on the stroke of half time as Lowman struck a brilliant 25-yard volley into the top corner to cap a superb quick-fire hat trick.
Rustons stepped up a gear as the second period opened but they found United's back four of Greensmith, Huntley, Giles and Albans in excellent form. After a couple of long range efforts, United once again took control and could have added to their lead, but the result was already assured.
