United Ease to Win over Brigg Town
By Tom O'Brien
Lincoln United moved further away from the bottom of the UniBond League Division One (South) table with a comfortable 2-0 win over Brigg Town.
It was the third win in four games for the battling Whites.
United's first chance came in the third minute. Sam Wilkinson linked up with Terry Fleming on the right-hand side, but Fleming's cross could not beat Andrew Pettinger.
In the 16th minute United went close again as Matt O'Halloran rattled the Brigg cross bar from 18 yards.
O'Halloran looked to have given his side the lead a minute later, but his free-kick flashed just wide of the post.
The Whites finally opened the scoring on the 26th minute. Brendan McDaid's scuffed shot fell sweetly to Steve Melton who scored from 25 yards.
The lead was doubled just after the half hour mark when O'Halloran linked up to Ryan Porter's ball and lobbed a stranded Pettinger.
It could have been three on the 40th minute, but Ben Garrick's effort was ruled out for offside.
The Whites carried on in the second half with Garrick threatening on 52 minutes.
From then on Brigg fought their way back into the game.
Tommy Spall pulled a shot wide from 12 yards on 61 minutes and two minutes later substitute Chris Rogers was in on goal, but Mario Ziccardi made himself big enough to block the shot.
With 20 minutes remaining McDaid had to act quickly to scoop Daniel Barrett's free-kick out of the six yard box and away from danger.
The last chance of the game fell to Rogers, whose attempt was cleared by the covering Fleming.
